Martiniano Lan is a thoroughbred horse, born in 2009 and registered in the Argentine stud book. Since the beginning of Haras Itapé, he’s our main stallion and winner of 1001 battles on the racecourses. During his extraordinary race career he used to run distances from 250m up to 1200m. In 2019, he retired from the racecourses. The spoiled beauty enjoys his own harem of mares and also provides services for other studs. His offspring perform on racetracks as well as endurance races and show jumping.

The MaresAt the stud, we have thoroughbred mares – some of them registered in the Argentine stud book – of very good bloodlines, for example those of the famous US race horse Secretariat. Some mares have performed successfully on racecourses before becoming part of the herd of brood mares. All the mares live out in the pasture lands where they raise their foals under our supervision but 100% naturally. In the last months of pregnancy (total duration 11 months) and in the first months of lactation, they receive food supplements to ensure the correct development of the foal and the health of the mother.

The FoalsIn spring, our "little ones" with super long legs and velvety nostrils are born. The mares give birth at night in separate paddocks, because usually, the curious rest of the herd is a stress factor for mare and new-born. Only an hour later, the foals already stand up and look for their mother's tit. The curiosity of the foals and the confidence of the mares allow us to pet the new-borns – a magical and very important moment for the future equine-human bond that is formed in those first hours of life (this technique is called imprinting). At Haras Itapé, we tame and break all our youngsters; they are healthy, docile and versatile animals, some performing on racecourses, others in show jumping and endurance. Top genetics and health are our base.

The CriollosFor our horse riding excursions with adults and children, we use criollos (Argentine cowboy horses) and crossbreeds criollo / thoroughbred. These horses have an extraordinary tameness and a lot of patience; they are great friends and teachers for children of all ages. In addition, they also work in the fields or corrals gathering cattle etc. Some of them also act as godfathers during the taming process of the two year old foals: They calmly accompany them to teach that there is nothing about humans to fear, that our breaking method - without violence - is a school, not a punishment. All our criollos enjoy their life in the pasture land all year around, together with mares and foals.
